About this course

Game technology is the technical discipline that makes interactive entertainment possible. Modern video games are among the most complex software systems ever created, involving real-time rendering, physics simulation, artificial intelligence, networking, audio processing, and the integration of all these systems into experiences that feel responsive and engaging. Game technology graduates are the engineers and programmers who build the tools, engines, and systems that games depend on, and whose skills are sought not only in the games industry but across any sector that uses real-time interactive graphics and simulation.

At Birmingham City University you will dive deep into the mechanics of game engines, exploring how graphics pipelines work, how physics and collision are simulated, how artificial intelligence governs non-player character behaviour, and how networked gaming systems handle the challenges of synchronisation and latency. You will also engage with emerging technologies that are reshaping the field, including virtual and augmented reality, procedural generation, and machine learning approaches to game content. Hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and equipment in the university's specialist labs gives you the practical competence that employers look for alongside theoretical understanding.

The three-year full-time programme equips you with the programming and systems knowledge that a technical career in games requires.

Graduates go on to careers as games programmers, engine developers, graphics engineers, tools programmers, technical artists, and simulation developers in the games, defence, film, architecture, and healthcare sectors. The programming and systems skills developed on this programme are broadly applicable in any technology sector that requires real-time systems, interactive simulation, or high-performance graphics. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study or research in games technology, computer science, or graphics.
