Gateway to Veterinary Science

The Gateway to Veterinary Science at the University of Bristol is a six-year programme designed for students who have the potential to become vets but do not meet the standard academic entry criteria to apply directly to the conventional five-year undergraduate Veterinary Science degree. It recognises that academic potential and a vocation for veterinary medicine are not always perfectly reflected in A-level grades, and it provides an additional year of preparation that gives students from a wider range of backgrounds access to one of the most demanding and rewarding professions in the health sciences.

Veterinary science is the discipline concerned with the health, welfare, and treatment of animals across an extraordinarily wide range of species, from companion animals and horses through to farm livestock, zoo animals, and wildlife. The profession draws on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, surgery, and internal medicine, applied across species with very different biologies and clinical presentations. Vets work not only with individual animals but with populations, contributing to public health, food safety, and the management of zoonotic diseases that can cross between animals and humans.

At Bristol, the Gateway year provides a thorough preparation in the biological and physical sciences that underpin veterinary study, developing the academic foundation and study skills needed to succeed in the main degree. Bristol has one of the UK's most respected veterinary schools, with excellent clinical facilities and strong connections to farm, equine, and small animal practice across the South West of England and beyond. A typical entry tariff of 136 points reflects the standard for the gateway route, which is designed to be more accessible than the direct entry pathway.

Graduates of Bristol's veterinary programme are eligible to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and work as vets in small animal, farm, equine, zoo, or government veterinary roles, or in research, public health, and the pharmaceutical industry.
