Geography and Economics

Geography and economics, studied together as regional science, is a combination that addresses one of the most important and often underappreciated questions in social science: why do economic activities locate where they do, and what are the consequences of spatial inequality for individuals, communities, and nations? It brings together the spatial and environmental analysis of human geography with the quantitative and theoretical rigour of economics, applying both to questions about globalisation, trade, urban development, sustainability, climate change, and the economic geography of regions and nations.

At the University of Reading, this three-year, full-time degree explores concepts from both disciplines, from consumerism and globalisation to the political and economic responses to climate change and the spatial dimensions of epidemics and crises. You will develop quantitative skills in economic analysis alongside the geographical understanding of how places are shaped by social, environmental, and economic forces. A sandwich year provides the opportunity for a substantial professional placement, and work placements are embedded in the course.
