About this course

Geography and environmental science is a degree that brings together the study of how the physical world works and how human activity is transforming it. Physical geography examines Earth's natural systems, including climate, rivers, coastlines, soils, and vegetation, asking how these systems function and how they are changing. Environmental science extends that inquiry to the human-environment relationship, examining the causes and consequences of pollution, habitat loss, climate change, and resource depletion, and evaluating the policies and technologies being developed to address them.

Human geography adds another dimension, examining how people inhabit, organise, and give meaning to space and place in an increasingly interconnected world.

At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year, full-time degree examines our relationship with the natural environment and develops your ability to understand and respond to the challenges of climate change, globalisation, urbanisation, development, and regeneration. You will develop both quantitative and qualitative skills, working with GIS, environmental data, fieldwork methods, and the analytical frameworks that geographers and environmental scientists use to make sense of complex systems. The programme includes the possibility of a year abroad, giving you an international perspective on the environmental challenges you study.

Graduates from geography and environmental science programmes work in environmental consultancy, planning, conservation, GIS, international development, local government, climate research, sustainability management, teaching, and policy. The combination of physical and human geography with environmental science is particularly valuable in roles that require understanding both the natural science and the social dimensions of environmental problems. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, planning, or a related discipline, building specialist expertise for research or professional careers.
