Geography and International Relations
Geography and international relations is a combination that addresses the world from two complementary angles. Geography investigates the physical systems, human societies, and environmental processes that shape the Earth's surface and the patterns of human settlement, resource use, and vulnerability that emerge from them. International relations examines how political actors, from states and international institutions to movements and corporations, interact in a world without a single governing authority, and what determines whether those interactions lead to cooperation or conflict.
At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme provides a challenging intellectual environment for those who want to think critically and creatively about the world and understand the interaction of environmental systems and human activity. You will study physical and human geography alongside international relations theory, global governance, security studies, and foreign policy analysis. The combination is particularly powerful for understanding questions such as climate change as a geopolitical issue, resource conflict, environmental migration, and the spatial dimensions of global inequality, all of which require both geographical and political understanding to address properly.
The programme includes a year abroad, which places you in an international academic environment and deepens your perspective on both geography and international relations as practised globally. The degree is studied full time over four years.
Graduates go on to careers in the civil service, diplomatic service, international organisations, NGOs, think tanks, journalism, environmental policy, and development agencies. The combination of spatial thinking and political analysis is particularly valued in organisations working on climate, security, and global development. Further study options include postgraduate degrees in international relations, geography, development studies, environmental policy, and security studies.
