Geography

Geography is uniquely positioned among academic disciplines: it spans the physical and social sciences, asking both how the Earth's natural systems work and how human beings shape and are shaped by the environments they inhabit. From climate change and biodiversity loss to urbanisation, migration, and spatial inequality, the discipline addresses the most consequential questions of our time and does so in ways that are inherently interdisciplinary and practically relevant. Studying geography means developing the capacity to think across scales, from the local to the global, and across the division between nature and society.

At Birkbeck, which has a long tradition of high-quality teaching for students who study part-time alongside other commitments, this BSc Geography is led by leading researchers in the field. You will develop skills and knowledge to understand our changing physical and social environment, exploring the multiple connections between space, place, human culture, and physical landscapes. The curriculum addresses issues including climate change, the causes and impacts of inequality, and how we live together in an increasingly urban world, drawing on both quantitative and qualitative methods to analyse geographical problems.

The part-time format allows you to study without giving up your professional or personal commitments, while still engaging with a rigorous and research-informed programme.

Geography graduates go on to careers in environmental management, planning, sustainability, international development, government, research, education, and the private sector. The analytical, technical, and communicative skills that geography develops are valued across a very wide range of employers, and the discipline's breadth makes it a genuinely flexible qualification. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in geography, urban planning, environmental science, or international development.
