Geography, geopolitics and global affairs is a degree that sits at the point where the physical and human world intersects with the political forces shaping our time. Geography provides the spatial and environmental foundations, asking how places, landscapes, and ecosystems have developed and how human activity is transforming them. Geopolitics examines the relationships between geography and power, exploring how the control of territory, resources, and strategic locations shapes international relations and conflict.
Global affairs brings in the full range of contemporary challenges, from climate change and migration to inequality, digital governance, and the shifting balance of global power.
At Royal Holloway you will study this three-year full-time programme, which includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement. The year abroad is particularly important for a programme concerned with global issues, giving you direct experience of a different part of the world and a different perspective on the forces the programme examines. You will develop both the analytical and research skills of a geographer and the political and strategic literacy of someone trained to think about power, conflict, and global governance.
The programme develops your capacity to engage with complex, multilayered questions that require drawing on multiple disciplines simultaneously.
Graduates of geography, geopolitics and global affairs enter careers in international organisations, think-tanks, the diplomatic service, NGOs, journalism, consultancy, government departments, intelligence analysis, and international business. The combination of geographical understanding, geopolitical literacy, and research skills is valued wherever organisations need to understand how the world is changing and what the implications are for their work. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in international relations, geopolitics, security studies, environmental policy, or geography, building on the interdisciplinary foundation the programme provides.
