Geography

Geography as a discipline uniquely bridges the natural and social sciences, examining the physical processes that shape the Earth's environments and the human processes that distribute people, economies and power across its surface. It encompasses physical geography, including geomorphology, climatology, hydrology and environmental change, alongside human geography, which addresses cities, globalisation, migration, development, political ecology and the relationship between society and environment. The international programme at UCL takes this already broad discipline and extends it further by engaging students with geographical questions across multiple national and continental contexts.

At UCL, one of the world's leading research universities for geography, this four-year programme involves an international dimension that exposes you to geographical processes and analytical traditions beyond the UK context. You will study physical geography, human geography, geographical methods, quantitative and qualitative research, GIS, remote sensing, environmental management and the contemporary debates that animate the discipline, including climate change, urban inequality, global migrations and the politics of development. UCL's location in London, a global city and a subject of intense geographical inquiry in its own right, provides a rich educational environment.

Geography graduates work in environmental consultancy, urban planning, international development, climate research, the public sector, NGOs, GIS and spatial data analysis, transport planning, disaster risk management, journalism and academic research. The combination of quantitative analytical skills and the ability to understand complex socio-environmental systems makes geographers versatile and valued across a wide range of organisations. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in human or physical geography, environmental management, urban planning, development studies or GIS.
