About this course

Physical geography is the study of the Earth's natural systems, examining the processes that shape landscapes, drive climate, move water and support life across the surface of the planet. It asks how glaciers erode mountains and deposit sediment, how rivers flood and change course, how volcanoes build new land and how the atmosphere regulates temperature and drives weather. These questions have never been more urgent, as climate change intensifies the frequency and severity of extreme events and reshapes the physical environment in ways that affect every human society.

At the University of Keele, this four-year BSc with foundation year is an accredited programme that prepares you for professional practice in geography.

The foundation year builds the scientific knowledge and academic skills you need before progressing into the full programme, which covers the breadth of physical geography from climate systems and sea level change to glaciology, geomorphology and volcanology. You will carry out fieldwork in real landscapes, developing the observational and mapping skills that geographers rely on, and work in laboratories using the analytical techniques that modern physical geography employs. Work placement opportunities are integrated into the programme, giving you professional experience alongside your academic development.

Physical geography graduates work in environmental consultancy, climate science, ecological assessment, land management, planning, hazard risk assessment and a growing range of sustainability-related roles across the public, private and voluntary sectors. Cartography, geographic information systems and remote sensing offer more technical career paths, where the combination of spatial thinking and data skills that geography develops is directly applicable. Government agencies, local authorities, research institutions and international development organisations all employ physical geographers.

Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in climate science, environmental science, hydrology, geomorphology or geographic information science.
