Geography

Geography at university is a discipline that refuses easy boundaries. It encompasses the physical processes that shape the Earth's surface, from glaciation and river dynamics to coastal erosion and climate systems, as well as the human forces that determine how people live, how cities develop, how economies are organised, and how societies respond to environmental change. Few degrees provide a comparable breadth of intellectual scope, and few prepare graduates to think across the natural and social worlds with equal confidence.

Aberystwyth University's Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is one of the most established departments of its kind in the UK, and the three-year full-time Geography programme offers you the opportunity to study the subject in a setting that is itself a geographical asset. The University's location on the west coast of Wales gives you access to diverse physical environments, from upland and coastal landscapes to river catchments and estuaries, all of which can serve as field laboratories. Fieldwork is central to geographical education, and Aberystwyth's environment is unusually rich for this purpose.

You will study geographical techniques including geographic information systems, remote sensing, and quantitative and qualitative methods, alongside the theoretical and analytical frameworks that allow you to interpret what you observe.
