Geography

Geography is one of the most genuinely interdisciplinary subjects available at university level. It spans the natural and social sciences, drawing on geology, biology, climatology, sociology, economics, and politics to understand both the physical world and the human societies that inhabit and transform it. At the University of Bristol, the BSc Geography is a three-year full-time programme that gives you a thorough grounding in both physical and human geography before allowing you to specialise in the areas that interest you most.

As the current programme description notes, your first year provides an overview of both physical and human geography and develops a range of geographical and scientific skills. Physical geography engages with the processes that shape landscapes, climate systems, rivers and coasts, soils, and ecosystems, and how these interact with and are affected by human activity. Human geography addresses the spatial patterns of cities, economies, migration, inequality, and political organisation, and the ways in which places are shaped by social and economic forces.

The remaining years allow you to move into specialist units from either or both branches of the discipline, developing depth alongside the breadth of your first year. Bristol is a research-active department with particular strengths in both environmental science and human geography, and the programme benefits from this dual focus.

Geography graduates are notably versatile in the employment market. The combination of scientific skills, quantitative data analysis, fieldwork experience, and social and policy awareness that geography develops is valued across a wide range of careers.
