Geography

Geography is one of the most genuinely interdisciplinary subjects you can study, connecting the physical and human worlds through questions about space, place, environment and society. Physical geography examines the processes that shape the Earth's surface, from climate systems and river dynamics to glaciers and ecosystems. Human geography explores how people organise their lives across space and how places are produced by economic, political, cultural and social forces.

Studying both together, as this degree encourages, gives you a distinctive capacity to think across the physical and human dimensions of the world's most pressing challenges, from climate change and environmental degradation to migration, urbanisation and inequality.

At the University of Newcastle, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial international and professional experience alongside a rigorous academic education. You will study physical geography, human geography, geographic information systems (GIS), quantitative and qualitative research methods, environmental science, development, urban studies, cultural geography and geopolitics, developing both the analytical tools and the empirical knowledge to understand complex spatial questions. Fieldwork is central to the discipline, and you will develop practical skills in data collection and analysis in real environments.

Geography graduates are valued across a wide range of sectors. Environmental consultancy, urban planning, development, the civil service, international organisations, NGOs, data analysis, education, the media and business all offer career pathways. The combination of quantitative and qualitative skills is particularly valuable, and GIS expertise opens specific opportunities in mapping, data visualisation and spatial analysis.

Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in geography, environmental science, urban planning, development or related fields, and the placement and international experience built into this degree provides a strong competitive advantage.
