Geography

Geography is the discipline that connects the physical world to the human societies that inhabit and transform it. It examines how landscapes are formed and changed by natural processes, how climate systems operate, how ecosystems function, and how human activities, from urbanisation and agriculture to energy use and resource extraction, reshape environments and generate social and economic consequences. The Highlands and Islands of Scotland provide an exceptionally rich setting for geographical study, with landscapes shaped by glaciation, volcanic activity, and millennia of human settlement, alongside contemporary challenges around depopulation, land use, and the energy transition.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands this part-time programme is rooted in the distinctive natural and cultural environment of the region while engaging with broader geographical themes and contemporary global questions. You will develop skills in field investigation, data analysis, geographical information systems, and environmental interpretation, building the practical competence alongside the theoretical knowledge that geography demands. The programme takes both physical and human geography seriously, developing your capacity to connect environmental processes with social and economic patterns.

A year in industry is embedded in the programme, providing professional experience in an organisation relevant to geography, environmental management, or a related field before you graduate.

Graduates move into careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, planning, local and regional government, natural heritage management, education, and research. The Highlands and Islands context makes the degree particularly relevant to careers in rural land management, tourism, and Highland development, while the skills it develops are transferable to environmental and spatial roles more broadly. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in geography, environmental science, or sustainability.
