Geography

Geography is the discipline that asks how physical environments and human societies shape each other, and it does so at every scale from the local to the planetary. Physical geography examines the processes that create landscapes, drive climate, move water, and shape ecosystems. Human geography investigates how people organise space, how cities develop, how economic activity distributes across regions, and how communities respond to environmental change.

The two strands are increasingly inseparable, and a geography degree develops your ability to think across the boundary between the natural and social sciences.

At Northampton this four-year degree includes a foundation year, making the programme accessible to students who have the curiosity and commitment that geography demands but who benefit from a supported academic preparation before the main degree begins. Once through the foundation year, you will develop both the conceptual and the practical dimensions of the discipline: fieldwork, quantitative and qualitative research methods, GIS and spatial analysis, environmental assessment, and the critical reading of geographical theory. Geography graduates are highly employable across a broad range of sectors.
