About this course

Geography with GIS and data science is a degree that combines the intellectual breadth of geography with the technical skills that are transforming how spatial and social problems are understood and solved. Geography asks foundational questions about places, people, and the environment, developing critical and analytical thinking alongside knowledge of both human and physical systems. Geographic information systems and data science then give you the technical toolkit to investigate those questions with cutting-edge methods: spatial analysis, satellite data, machine learning, and digital visualisation that allow patterns invisible to the naked eye to become legible.

At the University of Plymouth, this three-year full-time degree with foundation year provides an accessible entry route while delivering a technically rigorous programme. The foundation year builds the academic and quantitative foundations you need before entering the main degree. You will learn to investigate societal issues using technologies including GIS mapping, virtual reality, and urban fieldwork, applying both conceptual and practical training to the real challenges that human and physical geographers address.

The sandwich year gives you extended professional experience in a geographic, data, or environmental role, a year abroad broadens your perspective and experience, and work placement is integrated throughout. Plymouth's south-west location provides access to varied physical and urban geographic environments for fieldwork.

You will graduate with both the analytical and the technical skills that employers across a growing range of sectors look for, including the ability to work with spatial data and the judgement to apply it to real problems.

Graduates go on to careers in geographic information science, environmental and urban planning, data analysis, sustainability consultancy, defence, logistics, public health, and the public sector. The combination of geography's breadth and GIS and data science's technical depth is particularly well suited to roles in smart cities, environmental monitoring, and data-driven policy. Many continue to postgraduate study in GIS, data science, or environmental management.
