Geography with Persian
Geography and Persian is a combination that might seem unexpected, but it reflects a serious intellectual logic. Geography examines the interaction of environmental systems and human activity, asking how places are made, how people relate to their physical and social environments, and how global processes play out in specific localities. Persian, as the language of Iran and an important heritage language across Central and South Asia, gives you access to one of the world's great literary and cultural traditions and to a region of considerable geopolitical significance.
Together, these disciplines develop your capacity to think critically and creatively about the world, with both the analytical tools of geography and the linguistic and cultural depth that comes from serious language study.
At the University of St Andrews, you will study both disciplines over four years, developing your skills in geographical analysis, both human and physical, alongside progressively deeper engagement with Persian language and the literatures and cultures associated with it. Geography at St Andrews engages with questions at the forefront of the discipline, including environmental change, globalisation, inequality, and the politics of space and place. The programme includes a year abroad, which allows you to immerse yourself in a different academic and cultural environment, and the combination of geographical and linguistic study makes you well placed to make the most of that experience.
