Geography/Sociology

Geography and sociology together provide an exceptionally rich framework for understanding the world, connecting the analysis of place, environment and spatial patterns with the study of social structures, identities and the processes through which human societies organise themselves. Geography asks how landscapes, both physical and human, are formed and how they interact: how cities grow, how coastlines change, how people move across borders, and how environmental conditions shape and are shaped by human activity. Sociology asks how those human activities are structured by class, gender, race, culture and institutions, and how social change occurs.

At the University of Glasgow geography and sociology are both taught at a high level, with geography drawing on expertise in physical and human dimensions alongside methods in data analysis, fieldwork and independent research. The combination allows for a genuinely integrative approach to questions that neither discipline handles alone, such as how spatial inequality is produced and reproduced, how environmental pressures fall differently on different communities, and how migration and urbanisation transform societies and places. The programme runs over four years full time and includes a year abroad, giving you comparative international perspective on both disciplines.

Graduates of this combination are well placed for careers in urban planning, environmental management, social research, policy analysis, local government, the voluntary sector, international development, education and journalism. The combination of quantitative and qualitative skills developed across both disciplines is valued by employers in any context requiring an understanding of how social and spatial forces interact. Postgraduate study in human geography, sociology, social policy, environmental management or urban studies is a natural further step.
