Geology

Geology is the science of the Earth itself: its materials, structures, processes, and history across the vast timescales of geological time. It is a discipline that integrates chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics to understand how rocks and minerals form, how tectonic forces shape continents and ocean floors, how climate and ocean systems have interacted with the solid Earth over billions of years, and how human activity is now altering those interactions in measurable ways. Geology is also intensely practical: the discipline underlies resource extraction, environmental management, engineering site assessment, and the understanding of natural hazards.

At Birkbeck College, this three-year, full-time BSc provides the opportunity to study the Earth's processes and environments systematically, examining how rock and mineral formation has proceeded through geological time, how climate, ocean, and biosphere systems interact with the solid Earth, and how human interactions with the environment can be understood and managed through geological knowledge. Birkbeck's distinctive flexible teaching model makes the programme accessible to students whose circumstances require a different kind of timetable, without compromising the rigour or the field and laboratory experience that geology demands.

Geology graduates work across a wide range of sectors. The extractive and energy industries, environmental consultancy, engineering geology, water resource management, the public sector, and academic and applied research are all well-trodden paths. The combination of scientific knowledge, fieldwork experience, and data analysis skills that geology develops is valued wherever understanding of the Earth's physical systems is required.

Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in geology, geophysics, environmental science, or engineering geology, for those who wish to develop specialist expertise in a particular direction.
