Geology

Geology is the science of the Earth itself, from the forces that built mountain ranges and shaped ocean floors to the processes that continue to reshape the planet today. It draws on chemistry, physics, and biology to explain phenomena that unfold over timescales ranging from a single earthquake to hundreds of millions of years of continental drift. Understanding geology matters enormously for society, not just for finding the mineral and energy resources that modern economies depend on, but for managing natural hazards, protecting groundwater, and understanding how climate has changed throughout Earth's history.

Studying geology at Keele over three years of full-time study, you will develop practical skills alongside theoretical understanding. You will spend time in the field, reading rock sequences and mapping geological structures in the real landscape, as well as working in laboratories on geochemical analysis, fossil identification, and sediment characterisation. A sandwich placement year gives you direct experience of professional geology in an industrial or research setting, and a year abroad broadens your perspective on geological environments and scientific cultures that differ from those found in Britain.

Work placement opportunities are built into the programme, ensuring that by the time you graduate you have both academic knowledge and hands-on professional credibility.

Geology graduates are in demand across a wide range of sectors. The extractive industries, including oil, gas, and mining, have long recruited earth scientists, but there is growing demand in geotechnical engineering, where an understanding of ground conditions is essential for construction projects of all kinds. Environmental consulting firms rely on geologists to assess contaminated land, manage groundwater resources, and produce reports for planning applications.

Climate science and research institutions also draw on geological expertise, particularly in understanding past climate records preserved in ice, sediment, and rock. Many graduates continue into postgraduate research, qualifying as chartered geologists or specialising further in areas such as hydrogeology, volcanology, or applied geophysics.
