Geophysics

Geophysics applies the methods of physics and mathematics to the study of the Earth, exploring the processes and structures that operate within our planet and at its surface. From the movement of tectonic plates and the generation of earthquakes to the flow of the Earth's magnetic field and the distribution of oil and mineral reserves beneath the surface, geophysics addresses questions of enormous scientific and practical importance. At Durham University, this programme gives you a thorough grounding in the physical and mathematical tools of geophysics alongside the earth science context needed to apply them meaningfully. A sandwich placement year gives you the opportunity to work in a professional geophysical environment, gaining experience that is particularly valuable given the applied nature of the field.
