About this course

Geophysics is the science of understanding the Earth's interior and dynamics through physical measurement, mathematical modelling, and the analysis of fields including gravity, magnetism, seismic waves, and electromagnetism. Where geologists examine rocks and their physical characteristics directly, geophysicists probe structures that cannot be observed directly, inferring the composition and properties of the Earth's subsurface from the signals that pass through or emanate from it. The discipline has major practical applications in energy exploration, mineral prospecting, earthquake hazard assessment, environmental monitoring, and climate science.

At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year integrated masters programme is designed for curious and quantitatively capable students who want to understand the dynamic forces shaping our planet. The degree merges physics, mathematics, and earth sciences, giving you a rigorous analytical foundation alongside genuine earth science knowledge.
