About this course

Geophysics is the science of understanding the Earth through physical measurement and mathematical modelling. Rather than collecting rock samples, geophysicists probe the planet's interior using waves, gravitational fields, magnetic signatures, and electrical properties, building pictures of structures that are impossible to observe directly. The discipline underpins our ability to locate oil, gas, and mineral deposits, assess earthquake and volcanic risk, monitor ice sheets and aquifers, and understand the deep processes that shape the planet's surface over geological time.

Studying geophysics means developing strong foundations in physics and mathematics alongside an increasingly specialist understanding of Earth systems. You will explore how seismic waves propagate through different materials and what their behaviour reveals about subsurface structure. You will learn how gravity and magnetic surveys are used to map density contrasts deep in the crust, and how computational methods are used to invert geophysical data into coherent models of the Earth.

The degree builds analytical rigour, comfort with uncertainty, and the ability to work with large quantitative datasets, all of which are transferable across a wide range of technical careers.

This programme at the University of East Anglia is a four-year, full-time degree that includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and gain an international perspective on Earth science research and practice.
