About this course

Geophysics is the science of the Earth's physical properties and the methods used to investigate them, from the measurement of seismic waves generated by earthquakes to the use of gravity, magnetic, and electromagnetic surveys to image what lies beneath the surface. It draws on physics, mathematics, and geology to develop the quantitative understanding of the Earth's interior, its crust, and the processes that drive geological activity. Geophysics is fundamental to mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, to understanding natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanoes, and to the investigation of the deep structure of the planet.

At the University of Edinburgh this five-year full-time programme includes a professional placement year and a year abroad, giving you both sustained industry experience and international academic exposure. Edinburgh has exceptional strengths in earth sciences and geophysics, with access to state-of-the-art geophysical instrumentation and a research environment at the frontier of the discipline.
