German and Hungarian

German and Hungarian is an unusual but intellectually rich pairing, bringing together two major Central European languages and the distinctive cultures, histories, and literatures associated with them. German is one of the most widely spoken languages in Europe, carrying a literary, philosophical, and scientific tradition that has profoundly shaped European thought. Hungarian, a Finno-Ugric language with no close relatives in Europe, opens access to a literature and cultural tradition that is less familiar to most English speakers but no less rich, and connects you to a society with a complex and fascinating modern history.

This four-year full-time BA at University College London is a joint honours programme split equally between the two languages. You will develop competence in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation in both German and Hungarian, alongside modules in cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics associated with each language community. The wide variety of modules available allows you to tailor your degree to your areas of interest.

A third year abroad is spent in two countries where your languages are spoken, providing the extended linguistic immersion that is central to achieving high-level proficiency. The typical entry tariff is 168 points.
