About this course

German and Italian brings together two of Europe's most important languages and the rich literary and cultural traditions they carry. German opens access to one of the world's great philosophical, literary and musical traditions, from Goethe and Schiller to Kafka and Brecht, and to an economy and political culture of central significance in European and global affairs. Italian carries a legacy of extraordinary depth, encompassing Renaissance art and humanism, the literary tradition from Dante to Calvino, and the world's most influential contributions to music, architecture and design.

Studying both at University College London gives you genuine linguistic competence in each language alongside a deep engagement with their associated cultures and literatures.

This four-year full-time programme at UCL explores both languages, cultures and literatures comprehensively. You will engage with diverse texts and contexts, developing linguistic proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation, alongside modules in cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics and politics. The programme emphasises critical thinking and analytical skills, and you will be able to tailor your degree to your areas of interest across the range of modules on offer.

UCL's language programmes include study abroad opportunities that immerse you in the linguistic and cultural environments of the countries you are studying.

The combination of two major European languages and the cultural intelligence that comes from engaging deeply with both traditions prepares you for a wide range of careers in a globalised world.

Graduates pursue careers in translation and interpreting, international business, journalism, education, diplomacy, cultural organisations, law and the arts. Many go on to postgraduate study in German or Italian literature, linguistics, translation or European studies.

Would do it again
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” the city is a brillian…

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On t…
