About this course

German and Politics is a combination with clear intellectual logic: Germany is one of the most significant actors in European and global politics, and understanding German requires engaging with the political, historical and cultural forces that have shaped one of the world's most complex and consequential modern states. German language study gives you access to the literary, philosophical and political thought of the German-speaking world, from Goethe and Kant to contemporary political and cultural discourse. Politics provides the analytical tools to understand how governments function, how ideologies compete and how international relations are conducted at the level of states and global institutions.

At the University of Aberdeen this four-year full-time degree develops your German language skills to a high level alongside a rigorous engagement with national, European and global politics. You will be taught by experts who are regularly called upon to comment on unfolding events in the German-speaking world and in European and international politics. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your German language and cultural knowledge in an immersive context, strengthening your linguistic proficiency and your understanding of German-speaking societies from the inside.

Graduates from German and Politics degrees are well positioned for careers in European affairs, diplomacy, international business, the civil service, journalism, media and a range of other professional contexts where fluency in German and analytical understanding of politics are valued. The ability to engage with German-speaking institutions and communities is particularly relevant in the context of European integration, transatlantic relations and the significant role that Germany plays in global economic and diplomatic affairs. Postgraduate study in German studies, European politics, international relations or area studies is a natural continuation for those pursuing academic or specialist professional careers.
