German and Russian

German and Russian together offer access to two of Europe's most significant literary, intellectual, and political traditions. German has been the language of Goethe, Kafka, and Brecht, of Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche, of one of the world's largest economies and a nation whose twentieth-century history continues to shape how we understand modernity. Russian opens the world of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Akhmatova, along with a geopolitical culture whose significance in the present moment is difficult to overstate.

At the University of Manchester, this four-year, full-time programme includes both a sandwich year and a work placement, meaning you will spend time in a professional environment where your language skills are put to real use, and in contexts where German and Russian are spoken and studied. Manchester has an outstanding languages faculty, and you will develop your spoken and written competence in both languages to an advanced level while also studying literature, film, history, and culture in each tradition.
