About this course

Graphic design is the discipline of giving visual form to ideas and information, using typography, image, colour, layout, and composition to communicate with audiences across print, digital, and environmental media. A skilled graphic designer is both a creative thinker and a technical practitioner, able to develop original visual concepts and execute them with the precision and craft that professional work demands. The field spans branding and identity, editorial design, packaging, web and digital design, motion graphics, and advertising, and it operates across every sector of the economy.

At Middlesex University, this programme is offered on a part-time basis with an integrated foundation year, making it accessible to students who need to build their foundational creative and academic skills before moving into the main degree, while also studying at a pace that accommodates other commitments. The foundation year develops your visual literacy, drawing and design fundamentals, and critical thinking, preparing you for the more advanced studio work that follows. Throughout the programme you will engage with industry connections and develop a portfolio that reflects your creative range and technical competence.

The London context is itself a significant resource for graphic design study, giving you access to galleries, studios, creative agencies, and a design industry that is among the most dynamic in the world.

Graduates from graphic design programmes work in design studios, advertising agencies, publishing, digital media, in-house design teams, and as independent freelancers. The visual communication skills you develop are valued across a huge range of industries, from fashion and retail to technology and public services. Many graduates build portfolio careers combining employed and freelance work, while others move into art direction, creative direction, or design education.

Postgraduate study in graphic design or visual communication is an option for those who wish to develop their practice or pursue research and academic roles.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the studio culture is incredible β€” you learn as much from your peers as your tutors. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good tr…

This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the final show is a proper platform β€” industry people come to see it. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” local cost of livin…
