About this course

The connections between nutrition, physical activity, and human health are among the most well-established and practically significant findings in modern science. How we eat and how we move affect not just our physical condition but our cognitive function, mental wellbeing, and long-term risk of chronic disease. This programme at Southampton Solent draws those connections together, giving you a scientific grounding in health, nutrition, and exercise that prepares you to work in the growing sector of health and wellness, whether in sport, public health, or individual wellbeing.

You will study the physiology of exercise and physical performance, the biochemistry and science of nutrition, and how diet and activity interact to influence health outcomes across different populations and life stages. The programme takes a practical approach, making use of Southampton Solent's facilities to develop your ability to assess, plan, and support exercise and nutritional programmes for individuals with varied goals and needs. You will also examine the public health dimensions of nutrition and physical activity, understanding the broader societal context in which individual choices are made.

A foundation year is available for students who need additional preparation, and a sandwich year and work placement are built into the programme, giving you hands-on professional experience in a relevant setting.

Graduates go on to work in a range of settings, including sport and fitness, public health, clinical nutrition support, corporate wellness, health coaching, and community health programmes. The degree also provides a foundation for further professional training or postgraduate study in areas such as sport science, dietetics, physiotherapy, or public health. The sector continues to grow as awareness of preventive health increases, and practitioners with a grounded scientific understanding of how nutrition and exercise affect health are in steady demand.
