Health, Wellbeing and Social Support

Health, wellbeing, and social support is a practice-oriented discipline concerned with the direct delivery of care and support to people across a range of needs and circumstances. It brings together knowledge of human health and wellbeing, social care practice, and the ethical and legal frameworks that govern the relationship between practitioners and the people they support. The discipline matters because the quality of care that people receive, whether in residential settings, community services, healthcare, or family support, is directly shaped by how well-prepared and reflective the practitioners working in those contexts are.

At Teesside University this two-year full-time programme is designed to develop the knowledge and skills needed to promote care practices that support the best outcomes for the people you work with. You will study a range of typical client groups, including older adults, people with disabilities, children and families, and those experiencing mental health difficulties, developing the ability to reflect on the care provided and to ensure that effective and person-centred practice is maintained. The typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects the accessible character of this professionally focused programme.

You will develop practical care knowledge, reflective practice, communication skills, and the ethical awareness needed to work with people who may be vulnerable or in difficult circumstances. The programme builds the foundation for professional development in health and social care and related fields.

Graduates go on to work in social care, community support, residential care, healthcare support roles, and the voluntary sector. The degree also provides a platform for further study towards qualifications in nursing, social work, occupational therapy, or healthcare management, and many graduates use it as a stepping stone to further academic or professional development in the care sector.
