Hearing Aid Audiology
Audiology is the science of hearing, balance and communication disorders, a clinical and technical discipline that draws on physics, anatomy, physiology, psychology and engineering to understand how hearing works, what goes wrong, and how it can be helped. Hearing aid audiology focuses on the assessment of hearing loss and the selection, fitting, and management of hearing aids and related devices, placing you at the practical interface between clinical science and patient care. The field is growing, driven by an ageing population and by advances in hearing device technology, and qualified audiologists are in steady demand in both the NHS and the private sector.
At Anglia Ruskin University this programme is delivered part-time, making it accessible to those already working in a healthcare or audiology support role who wish to develop formal clinical qualifications alongside their practice. It is also available as a distance learning programme, giving you the flexibility to study without needing to attend campus on a regular basis. You will explore the physical and psychological basis of hearing and hearing disorders, developing your understanding of how sound is processed by the ear and the brain and how that processing can be disrupted by age, noise exposure, infection, or congenital factors.
You will also develop the assessment, analysis and communication skills that are central to clinical practice, including the ability to test hearing accurately and to discuss findings with patients clearly and sensitively.
Graduates from this programme are equipped for careers in audiology practice, particularly in hearing aid dispensing and audiological rehabilitation in NHS settings and the independent hearing care sector. Many use the qualification to progress towards full registration as a clinical audiologist or to take on more specialist roles in paediatric audiology, cochlear implant programmes, or vestibular assessment. The programme also provides a foundation for further study in clinical audiology or related healthcare sciences.
