Hebrew and Polish

Hebrew and Polish is an unusual and intellectually stimulating combination that opens two distinct but historically intertwined linguistic and cultural traditions. Hebrew is both an ancient sacred language, central to Jewish religious and literary life for thousands of years, and a thriving modern spoken language, the official language of the State of Israel and a vehicle for a rich contemporary literature, cinema, and intellectual culture. Polish is the most widely spoken of the West Slavic languages, the language of one of Europe's larger nations and of one of its most complex and poignant modern histories, including the Holocaust, the communist period, and the democratic transitions of the late twentieth century.

The connection between the two languages is not incidental: Jewish communities were deeply embedded in Polish society for centuries, and the histories of Hebrew and Polish speakers are woven together in ways that studying both languages brings into sharp relief.

At University College London, this four-year full-time programme develops your proficiency in both languages while also giving you access to the literatures, histories, and cultures they open up. You will study Hebrew and Polish at the level appropriate to your entry point, progressing to advanced reading, writing, and spoken communication in both. Alongside language study you will engage with literary texts, historical sources, and cultural materials, developing skills in translation, close reading, and critical analysis.
