About this course

BA History and Sociology explores how these disciplines influence one another. Study historical periods as well as what connects people, and what divides them. BA History and Sociology with Foundation Year is a four-year undergraduate degree designed to prepare you for successful progression into degree-level study before you begin the main course.

This degree at University of Essex brings together two complementary disciplines that explore how societies are formed, how they change over time, and how individuals and groups experience the world. You will study historical periods alongside key sociological ideas, developing a strong understanding of political, cultural and social change. The foundation year is designed to prepare you for university-level study by building essential academic skills, subject knowledge and confidence.

It provides structured support in critical thinking, academic writing, research and independent learning, helping you progress successfully onto the full undergraduate degree. History and sociology together help you understand both how societies have developed and how they function today.
