History and Sociology

The Highlands and Islands context gives the subjects a distinctive flavour: the region has a rich and often complex history, shaped by the Highland Clearances, clan society, crofting culture, linguistic diversity, and the broader currents of British and European history, and its communities raise fascinating sociological questions about rural life, identity, and change. You will engage with both the historical record and with sociological theory, developing skills in critical reading, evidence evaluation, academic writing, and the construction of analytical arguments.

Graduates of History and Sociology programmes develop skills that are valued across a wide range of careers. Teaching, the civil service, social work, community development, journalism, public policy, the voluntary sector, heritage and archival work, and social research are all well-established routes.
