About this course

History and Spanish is a combination that connects the study of the human past with the linguistic tools to engage directly with one of the world's richest and most diverse cultural traditions. Studying history develops your knowledge of the past and gives you a better understanding of the present, training you to research evidence, interpret primary sources, and construct persuasive arguments about events and their causes. Spanish opens access to the literature, art, film, and political history of Spain and Latin America, as well as giving you a professionally valuable language skill in a world where Spanish-speaking societies are increasingly significant.

At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme develops your historical understanding alongside advanced Spanish language and cultural knowledge. You will engage with historiographical debates and primary sources across a range of historical periods and regions, while also developing your Spanish reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills and studying the literary, cultural, and political contexts of the Spanish-speaking world. Entry typically requires around 200 UCAS tariff points.

Graduates of history and Spanish work in journalism, the diplomatic service, education, archives and heritage, publishing, cultural institutions, international business, the civil service, and a wide range of professional fields where the combination of historical understanding and Spanish language ability is valued. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in history, Hispanic studies, or international relations, or pursue professional qualifications in areas such as translation or teaching.

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you share…
