History and Theology

History and Theology is a pairing that rewards curiosity about how religious belief, practice, and institutions have shaped human experience across the centuries. Theology examines the content and development of religious thought, scripture, ethics, and the nature of faith, while History provides the methods for situating those ideas in the political, social, and cultural contexts from which they emerged. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this programme is studied part-time, allowing you to work through the degree at a pace that fits alongside other commitments. You will take modules one or a small number at a time rather than carrying the full-time load, which makes the programme well suited to students who are balancing work, family, or other responsibilities. The University of the Highlands and Islands has a distinctive presence across northern Scotland and the islands, and its curriculum often draws on the rich religious and cultural heritage of those communities alongside wider historical and theological themes.

Across the programme you will engage with primary religious texts and historical sources, develop skills in close reading and argumentation, and explore the relationship between faith traditions and the societies that practised and debated them. You will consider how Christianity, and sometimes other religious traditions, intersected with politics, culture, gender, and everyday life across different periods and places.
