History

History as a discipline is concerned with understanding how the past explains the present, and why the stories we tell about previous generations continue to shape what we think, believe, and do today. It is not simply the memorisation of dates and events but a critical practice of reading evidence, evaluating competing accounts, understanding context, and constructing arguments about what happened and why. The best historical study is also reflective, asking how later generations have interpreted and misappropriated the past for their own purposes, and what that tells us about the societies doing the interpreting.

Studied part-time at Leeds Beckett University, this degree engages directly with history as a subject for the contemporary world. You will explore revolution and resistance, empire and its legacies, inequality and social movements, migration, and the history of the media and the environment, connecting the past to questions that are urgent in the present. Part-time study makes the degree accessible to students managing work or family commitments alongside their education, and the programme includes the option of a year abroad, which provides the opportunity to engage with history from the perspective of another academic and cultural tradition.
