History of Art and Theology & Religion

History of Art and Theology and Religion is a combination that invites you to think about the relationship between visual culture and belief, two of the most powerful forces shaping human experience across time. Art history examines how works of art and architecture have been created, understood, and valued in different cultural contexts, from ancient and medieval works through to modern and contemporary practice. Theology and religion explores the origin, function, and meaning of religious traditions, asking how belief systems develop, how they shape societies and individuals, and how they compare across cultures and across time.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme situates European art in its global connectedness while also examining the full complexity of religious tradition, with particular attention to Christian faith in both historical and contemporary contexts. You will develop your ability to analyse visual material closely, situating works of art within the social, political, and theological contexts that produced them. The theology and religion strand introduces you to the major world religions and to the scholarly methods used to interpret religious texts, practices, and communities.

The two subjects illuminate each other powerfully: so much of the history of art is inseparable from the history of religious patronage, iconography, and meaning. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to encounter art and religious culture in a different national or institutional context.

Graduates go on to careers in museums, galleries, heritage organisations, education, journalism, publishing, the civil service, chaplaincy, interfaith organisations, and cultural policy. The combination of visual literacy and religious and cultural knowledge is particularly valued in institutions that engage with the full range of human experience. Postgraduate study in art history, theology, cultural studies, or museum studies is a natural route for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
