History of Art

Art history is the discipline that examines how human beings have made, interpreted, and assigned meaning to visual objects and environments across time and cultures. It brings together historical analysis, philosophical inquiry, sociological thinking, and the close observation of objects, asking not only what a work of art looks like but what it meant in the context where it was made, how it has been received and interpreted since, and what it continues to mean for audiences today. At its best, art history trains a way of seeing that is simultaneously visually sensitive, historically informed, and critically alert, developing skills that transfer readily to many fields beyond art itself.

At the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, the world's leading institution for the study of art history, this three-year full-time BA offers an education that is genuinely unmatched in its breadth and depth. The curriculum, revised in 2022-23, covers art and architecture from across the globe and from late antiquity to the present, including Byzantine and Early Modern Islamic worlds, Medieval and Renaissance Europe, International Modernism, and contemporary practices from China and the Black Atlantic. You will study across an extraordinary chronological and geographical range, developing both the specialist expertise and the comparative breadth that serious art historical scholarship requires.

Graduates of art history at the Courtauld are exceptionally well prepared for careers in museums, galleries, auction houses, arts publishing, cultural heritage, and arts administration.
