History of art and Spanish is a combination that develops your capacity to read visual culture alongside your ability to engage deeply with one of the world's most widely spoken languages and its extraordinarily diverse literary and cultural traditions. History of art trains you to look carefully, to interpret paintings, sculpture, architecture, photography, and other visual forms within their historical and social contexts, and to understand how artistic works are produced, received, and given meaning across time. Spanish opens access to the cultures of Spain, Latin America, and the many Spanishophone communities around the world, encompassing literature, film, history, and contemporary life across a vast geographic range.

At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme gives you the depth that both subjects demand. Your history of art studies will take you from antiquity through to contemporary practice, developing your skills in formal analysis, art historical method, and critical interpretation. Your Spanish studies will develop your linguistic proficiency toward an advanced level, with the opportunity to work with native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world, reflecting the breadth of the language and its cultural diversity.

The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities, giving you experience in professional settings, whether in galleries, cultural institutions, arts organisations, or Spanish-language environments, before you graduate.

You will develop strong analytical and communication skills, the ability to engage with both visual and textual sources across languages and cultures, and the intellectual range that comes from pursuing two genuinely demanding disciplines.

Graduates go on to careers in galleries and museums, cultural heritage, arts management and policy, journalism, translation, international business, education, and publishing. The combination of Spanish fluency and visual cultural expertise is distinctive and valued by a range of employers. Postgraduate study in art history, curating, translation, or Spanish studies is a natural continuation.
