History of Art

The history of art is concerned with how human beings have made and interpreted visual objects across time and across cultures. It asks not only what things look like but why they were made, how they have been used, what meanings they have carried, and how those meanings have changed as audiences and contexts have shifted. It is a discipline that trains close, patient attention to objects alongside broader historical and theoretical thinking.

At the University of Manchester you will study painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, film, and a wide range of other visual and material practices from ancient to contemporary. You will learn to look carefully, to describe precisely, and to build interpretations that are grounded in visual evidence as well as historical knowledge. You will engage with methodological debates about how art history is practised, from formalist analysis and iconographic traditions to social history, psychoanalytic criticism, and postcolonial approaches.

These frameworks are not simply academic categories but tools that allow you to ask genuinely different questions about the same object.

The programme runs over three years full time. Manchester's collections and the proximity of major national museums and galleries make it possible to engage with original works alongside reading and seminar discussion. You will develop strong skills in close analysis, structured argument, and sustained writing, all of which are central to the subject and valuable well beyond it.

History of Art graduates go into a wide range of careers, including work in museums, galleries, auction houses, arts administration, publishing, journalism, arts education, and the heritage sector. The critical and analytical skills developed in the degree also prepare you well for roles in communications, consultancy, and cultural policy, as well as postgraduate study in art history, curatorial practice, and related fields.
