History of art with German is a combination that allows you to engage with some of the world's great art and cultural traditions through the language and critical perspective of a culture that has been central to European and global art history. Germany, Austria and the German-speaking world produced Albrecht Durer, Caspar David Friedrich and the Bauhaus, and were home to the art historians who developed many of the analytical frameworks still used today. Studying German alongside the history of art opens a richer, more textured engagement with visual and cultural material.

At the University of York you will study this four-year full-time programme, which includes time in another country through a year abroad element, allowing you to experience cultural and artistic life, language and academic study in a different national context. The programme also offers a sandwich year with embedded work placement opportunities, giving you the chance to gain professional experience in a relevant setting, whether in museums, galleries, archives, arts organisations or elsewhere. You will develop your German language skills alongside the analytical study of visual art across periods from the medieval to the contemporary, building an understanding of how art is produced, circulated, received and interpreted.
