About this course

History of art and psychology are disciplines that occupy apparently different intellectual territories but share a deep concern with the relationship between image, mind, and meaning. History of art investigates how and why paintings, sculptures, buildings, and designed objects come to look the way they do, examining the cultural, historical, social, and material contexts that shape visual production and reception. Psychology provides rigorous scientific methods for understanding perception, cognition, emotion, and behaviour, offering tools that enrich the study of how images are experienced and interpreted.

Together they develop an unusual combination of historical and cultural sensitivity with scientific analytical rigour.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme develops your understanding of both disciplines in genuine depth. History of art will take you through the major movements and periods of Western and non-Western visual culture, training you to look carefully, to situate objects within their historical and social contexts, and to engage with the theoretical frameworks that contemporary art history deploys. Psychology will develop your understanding of how the mind works, covering cognitive, developmental, social, and biological psychology alongside the research methods that are central to psychological science.

The programme includes a year abroad, allowing you to study at a partner institution and to engage with art and psychology in a different academic context.

Graduates from this combination are well placed for careers in museums and galleries, arts administration, cultural policy, market research, user experience design, therapy and counselling, education, and journalism. The combination of visual intelligence and psychological understanding is valued in branding, advertising, and communications as well as in the cultural sector. Further study at postgraduate level in history of art, psychology, museum studies, or related fields is open to those who wish to develop specialist expertise.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city…
