History

History is the study of how the past has shaped the present, and why understanding that shaping matters. It is not a fixed body of facts but an active process of inquiry, involving the critical analysis of evidence, the construction of arguments, and the constant revisiting of received accounts in the light of new sources and new questions. Whether examining war and conflict, political change, social movements, or the changing role of race, class, and gender in modern society, history teaches you to think carefully about causation, context, and interpretation, and to communicate your conclusions clearly and persuasively.

At the University of Gloucestershire, you will study history across a range of periods and themes over three years full-time, developing skills in archival research, source criticism, historiographical debate, and historical writing. The programme engages seriously with the idea that the past is not simply background to the present but actively contested in the contemporary world, from debates about monuments and heritage to political conflicts over national identity.
