History

History is the study of human experience over time, examining the events, ideas, structures, and contingencies that have made the world we inhabit. At its best it is not simply a matter of knowing what happened, but of asking how we know, whose accounts have survived and whose have been silenced, how the past has been interpreted and reinterpreted, and what assumptions shape the way we look backwards. It is a discipline that develops critical reading, analytical argument, and the ability to handle complex, sometimes contradictory evidence, all of which are skills of lasting value beyond the study of history itself.

At the University of Northampton, you will study History over three years, full time. You will range across different periods and geographies, developing breadth of knowledge while also learning to work with primary sources and engage with scholarly debate in your areas of particular interest. The programme typically spans medieval, early modern, and modern history, with opportunities to explore British, European, and global perspectives.

You will develop your skills in archival and document-based research, essay construction, and oral argument through seminars and independent study. Historiographical awareness, meaning the ability to understand and critically evaluate the different theoretical and methodological frameworks historians bring to their work, is a central part of what you will develop.

History graduates are valued in many professional contexts for their capacity to research thoroughly, argue carefully, and write clearly. Graduate careers include roles in education, the civil service, journalism, publishing, museums and archives, heritage organisations, law, and business. The transferable skills the degree builds are genuinely broad.

Many graduates also continue into postgraduate study, including master's and doctoral programmes in history and related disciplines, and routes into academic research, teaching, or professional archival and museum work.
