History

History at Sussex is a degree that takes the full breadth of the human past seriously, from the history of emotions and environmental history to the histories of rave, fashion, and youth culture. You will discover how history was made and shaped not only by leaders and politicians but by ordinary men and women across Britain, Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. The degree is designed to let you follow the histories that matter most to you, whether those are local or global, ancient or contemporary, social or political, and to develop the analytical, research, and argumentative skills that allow you to understand and communicate those histories with rigour.

At the University of Sussex, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who would benefit from additional academic preparation before the main degree content begins. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placements are all part of the programme, giving you direct professional experience in settings where historical knowledge and skills are applied, and an international dimension that encourages you to see the past from multiple cultural perspectives. Sussex's long tradition of socially engaged and globally minded history provides a stimulating intellectual environment for exploring the full range of human experience.

With a typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points, this programme is accessible to students with the curiosity and commitment that history at this level demands. Graduates pursue careers in education, the civil service, law, journalism, heritage and museums, archival work, policy research, publishing, broadcasting, politics, international development, and the voluntary sector. The research, critical thinking, and writing skills that history develops are transferable across many professional contexts.

Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in history, archival science, public policy, or related disciplines.
