About this course

History with Spanish is a degree that develops your engagement with the past through rigorous historical scholarship while also developing your capacity to engage with the Spanish-speaking world through language and culture. History provides the analytical tools to reconstruct and interpret events across time, drawing on primary sources, archaeological evidence, and secondary scholarship to build arguments about how the past unfolded and what it means. Spanish opens access to the extraordinarily rich historical traditions of Spain and Latin America, as well as to contemporary Spanish-speaking societies across three continents.

At the University of Dundee, this four-year full-time programme covers social, cultural, and political history from the early modern period through to the present, with particular focus on the British Isles, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and India. Your Spanish language studies develop alongside your historical work, building you toward professional proficiency in a language that is central to the history of empire, colonialism, and cultural exchange. A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to spend time in a Spanish-speaking environment that deepens both your language and your historical perspective.

Graduates from history with Spanish pursue careers in journalism, the civil service, international organisations, publishing, education, heritage, and research, with the Spanish language adding particular value in roles with a Latin American or Spanish dimension. The combination is well suited to careers in international relations, development organisations, and roles in the growing number of organisations working across Anglophone and Hispanophone contexts. Postgraduate study in history, Spanish studies, and Latin American studies is a natural progression.

It's been a mixed experience, but mostly positive. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable …
