Horticulture
Horticulture is the science and practice of cultivating plants for food, aesthetics, health, and environmental benefit, encompassing the production of fruit, vegetables, and herbs alongside the design, establishment, and management of gardens, parks, and green urban spaces. It is a discipline with both deep historical roots and urgent contemporary relevance: as food security, biodiversity, and the greening of urban environments become pressing priorities, the skills and knowledge of trained horticulturalists are increasingly in demand. Studying horticulture means developing both scientific understanding and practical craft, connecting plant biology and soil science with the hands-on work of growing things.
At Anglia Ruskin University this three-year full-time programme develops your knowledge of plant science, horticultural production, landscape management, and the environmental and commercial dimensions of the horticultural industry. You will study plant physiology, pest and disease management, sustainable growing practices, and the design and management of horticultural environments, building both theoretical and practical competence. The programme also explores the health and social benefits of green spaces and community horticulture, reflecting the growing recognition that access to plants and gardens is important for human wellbeing as well as environmental health.
Horticulture graduates work in commercial food production, garden and landscape management, public parks and botanic gardens, horticultural therapy, nursery management, garden design, environmental consultancy, and the rapidly growing urban farming and community growing sectors. Some graduates build careers in plant research, agricultural development, or environmental management, while others focus on the design and creation of beautiful outdoor spaces. Many pursue further study or professional qualifications with bodies such as the Royal Horticultural Society, which provides recognised pathways for career development in the profession.
