About this course

Human biosciences is a broad life science discipline that examines the biological foundations of human health and disease. It brings together several of the most important fields in modern biomedical science, including genomics, which investigates how our genetic makeup influences health and susceptibility to disease; neurophysiology, which addresses the structure and function of the nervous system; and microbiology, which examines the role of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms in infection and immunity. Together these fields provide a rigorous scientific understanding of how the human body works and why, and what happens when biological processes go wrong.

At Coventry University you will gain hands-on laboratory experience throughout the programme, developing the practical skills in biological investigation that are central to work in the bioscience and healthcare sectors. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you a substantial combination of professional and international experience alongside your academic studies. These opportunities to work in real laboratory, research or healthcare-related environments are consistently valuable for both the depth of your learning and your prospects in a competitive graduate market.

You will develop competence in laboratory techniques, data analysis, scientific communication and the critical evaluation of biological evidence. The programme also develops your understanding of the ethical and professional dimensions of scientific practice in human health contexts.

Graduates from human biosciences programmes move into careers in clinical laboratory sciences, pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, public health, healthcare support roles and the life science industry. Many also use the degree as preparation for postgraduate study in biomedical science, medicine, physiotherapy or other health professions, or for research careers in genomics, neuroscience or microbiology.
