Human Geography

Human geography is the branch of geography concerned with the study of human societies, cultures and economies in relation to the physical and spatial environments they inhabit. It examines how people organise themselves across space, how they use and transform the land, how cities and regions develop, how inequality and power are distributed geographically, and how global processes of trade, migration, climate change and urbanisation shape places and communities. The discipline is both empirical and critical, combining data analysis and fieldwork with theoretical frameworks drawn from the social sciences and humanities.

At Cardiff University, this three-year programme emphasises the relevance of human geography to the real world of policy, planning and public life. You will develop the knowledge and analytical tools to understand how geographical processes shape society, and you will learn how to apply that knowledge to influence the views and actions of elected decision-makers, the voluntary sector and industry in order to improve communities and environments.
